The Right Sustainable Ingredients In Your Routine
We all know how important it is to invest in a good skincare routine that is fitted to our skin type and its ingredients have a positive effect in nourishing and protecting our skin from the outside world. Do we pay the same attention to the makeup we put, though? More often than not, we like to think that if the skincare routine we have is strong, the makeup wouldn’t matter. However, in choosing makeup that contains the right ingredients to further support the creams, cleansers, serums, and all the other steps in our skincare routine, we are securing our journey for beautiful, glowing skin.
Why should you care what makeup you put on?
Beauty myths claim that makeup does not penetrate the top layer of your skin, however, this is not the case. Often, we wear foundation and concealer for most of our day, reapply some powder to keep everything in place, give ourselves a glow with a highlighter, do a little blush and contour. Add some mascara, eyeliner or eye shadow, and eyebrow pencil into the mix and you are out the door. By the end of the day, some of that makeup is gone, whether you touched your face a little too much (which you know you shouldn’t) or had a little breakdown that washed it off, but the rest ended up going under the top layer of your skin. That’s a great start for clogging pores, dehydrating the skin, and sometimes it could lead to those annoying pimples we all despise. No, I am not trying to throw you off wearing makeup, I am just pointing out why the makeup that we put on does matter. Most articles focus on telling you which ingredients are not good for your skin and should be avoided. I am here to help you choose the makeup products that have sustainable ingredients that will be beneficial for your skin.
What ingredients should you look for?
Makeup products can contain plenty of ingredients that are good for your skin. After explaining the benefits of sustainable and ethical beauty in the previous two articles, it is time to look at some of the ingredients that the pioneering brands use that will nourish and protect your skin.
I have compiled a list of the ingredients you should look for on your next makeup shopping spree:
- Antioxidants
- Botanical oils
- SPF
Here is why those ingredients are good for you and which of the brands in my “Sustainable and ethical beauty brands you need in your life” article contain those.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are natural substances that are made of vitamins and minerals. They have the power to create a barrier that protects your skin from the environment. An example of a common antioxidant in makeup is Vitamin C, which I go more in-depth about in my “The Ultimate Guide to topical Vitamin C” article you can find here. In short, it has the power to reduce inflammation and combat discoloration. Another antioxidant is Vitamin E, which is known for its ability to prevent swelling and cell damage, which leads to wrinkling. 100% Pure is the sustainable and ethical beauty brand I mentioned in my previous article that focuses on using antioxidants in its makeup products.
Botanical oils
Oils are not to be limited solely to our skincare or haircare routines. Sustainable and ethical beauty brands focus on using botanical oils in their makeup products as they can nourish the skin. Some of the most common types of oils used in makeup are argan oil, rosehip oil, marula oils, etc. RMS beauty focuses on using coconut oil which has antibacterial properties, or jojoba seed oil which has anti-inflammatory properties. The brand also uses rosehip oil which promotes skin cell growth and limits the effects of aging. Kosås Cosmetics also uses botanical oils like avocado oil for hydration, green team seed oil for pollution-fighting, and many others. There are some other really amazing oils here.
SPF
Protecting our skin from the UVA and UVB rays is essential. Although dermatologists recommend using SPF in your skincare, adding it to your makeup routine is another way to ensure you are all covered. The two fully UV blocking ingredients that we want to look for are zinc and titanium dioxide. Barefaced Beauty’s foundation contains those two ingredients for natural sun protection properties.
Now it’s your turn
Sustainable and ethical beauty is becoming more and more important to us with the negative effects that many brands have on the environment, animals and those who are in charge of creating the products before they reach us. Now you know why sustainable and ethical beauty important, which brands you should shop from and why it is better for you and your skin. Let’s continue the change!
